As the new financial year begins, many Australians start asking the same question: When can I lodge my tax return?
Here’s everything you need to know about tax return lodgement dates for the 2025 financial year.
When Does Tax Time Start?
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) begins processing tax returns for the financial year ended 30 June 2025 from 1 July 2025.
However, while you can technically lodge from 1 July, it’s not always the best idea.
Why You Might Want to Wait
Each year, the ATO pre-fills information such as:
Employment income from your employer (via STP)
Bank interest
Dividends
Private health insurance
Government payments
This pre-filled data typically isn’t complete until mid-to-late July. Lodging too early can result in errors or missing information, which can slow down your refund or lead to an amended return later.
Our Recommendation
We generally recommend waiting until at least 15 July 2025 before lodging, especially if:
You have multiple sources of income
You receive private health cover
You have investment income or capital gains
If you’re unsure, we’re happy to review your situation and let you know when everything is ready.
Due Dates for Lodgement
Here’s a quick guide to the key dates:
Self-prepared returns:Lodgement deadline is 31 October 2025
Lodging through a registered tax agent (like us): Extended deadlines apply—often into 2026—as long as you're on our client list before 31 October 2025
